On 27 March, Vision Rehabilitation Services was honoured to be invited to speak with the Komātua Group at the Te Karaiti Te Pou Herenga Waka gathering. We introduced our Diabetes Lifestyle Program (DLP) to a group of respected Māori elders, focusing on how diabetes can impact vision and overall well-being.
The presentation highlighted the risks of diabetes-related vision loss, the effects of uncontrolled blood sugar, and how thoughtful diet and lifestyle choices can promote long-term health. Our team shared practical nutrition tips and discussed how the DLP helps participants make meaningful, lasting changes through guidance, physical activity, and ongoing education.
It was a privilege to connect with the kaumātua, engage in open kōrero, and share how culturally grounded support can improve the lives of tangata whaikaha Māori living with or at risk of diabetes.

Vision Rehabilitation Services recently had the opportunity to connect with Glaucoma NZ and introduce the wide range of support we provide to individuals living with vision impairments.
During the session, our team shared how key services such as Orientation and Mobility (O&M), Assistive Technology (AT), and Independent Life Skills training can empower individuals to navigate their environments safely, maintain independence, and adapt confidently to everyday life with vision loss.
We also engaged in meaningful conversations about the emotional and psychological impact of vision impairment—acknowledging the challenges, answering personal concerns, and offering practical, culturally respectful solutions. It was an insightful exchange that reinforced our shared commitment to improving quality of life for those affected by glaucoma and other vision conditions.
We look forward to continued collaboration and supporting more people through accessible, tailored rehabilitation pathways.

Day 1: Building Foundations
The first day focused on building a strong theoretical foundation, covering key concepts around respectful engagement, disability awareness, and vision rehabilitation knowledge. Through presentations, group discussions, and shared reflections, participants explored the lived experience of vision loss, the importance of inclusive language, and the principles of person-centred, culturally responsive support.
This learning laid the groundwork for deeper empathy, understanding, and confidence in working alongside people with low vision or blindness.
Day 2: Hands-on Training
One of the most impactful parts of the training was the hands-on experience designed to simulate real-world challenges faced by individuals with vision loss. Participants wore simulation glasses that mimic various eye conditions—such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts—allowing them to experience the world through different lenses.
Guided by our team, staff and volunteers engaged in practical tasks such as pouring water into a glass, navigating unfamiliar spaces, and crossing the street. These simple yet powerful exercises revealed how even routine activities become complex when vision is impaired. The sessions offered a vivid insight into the lived experience of people with vision loss and underscored the crucial role of Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training in supporting independence and confidence.
This immersive approach fostered empathy, built awareness, and deepened participants’ commitment to providing effective and respectful support.
